After the 2002 Princeton meeting,

    Paul A. A. Dirac
  • Wigner's daughter sent me this photo. Her name was Martha Wigner Upton (1945-2011).

In 1958, she came with her daddy to the Departmental Christmas party at Princeton University. Wigner was introducing her to everybody as "my daughter." She was only 13 years old.

During the years 1961-62, she used to come alone to the math department to attend calculus classes. She was a high-school student. Since Princeton was an all-male school at that time, her appearance was somewhat unusual.

  • Wigner had two sisters. Her younger sister, Margit (known as Manci among physicists), was Dirac's wife.

  • I met her in 1978 (in Florida) and in 1988 (in Princeton). Here is my story about her. Her husband was of course a great physicist. I also met him twice. Click here for my Dirac page.
