- Polish Student in Warsaw
I was talking with this Polish student while waiting for a bus.
She was born in 1984, and she knows her country was under communist
domination until recently. This is a photo of their
Palace of Culture and Science
at the Center of Warsaw. This tower was built by Russians in the
early 1950s as a gift of Soviets to Polish comrades. Polish people
decided not to tear down this Stalinist structure because it still
serves many useful purposes, and because they do not want to upset their
Russian neighbors. This photo was taken in October of 2007.

Polish Friends in U.S.A.
- Daria Zieminska came to the Univ. of Maryland
from Poland in 1979 as a post-doc in high-energy
physics. This photo was taken in the spring of 1980 in Annapolis, while
her husband and son were still in Poland. Together with them, she is now
an exemplary citizen of the United States. I learned many things about
Poland from her while she was in Maryland. Where is she now?
Click here for Daria's home page. She is an outstanding physicist.
- Are you from Poland?
There are many Polish ladies in the United States. Thanks to my special
interest in Poland, I can tell whether they came from
Poland by looking at them. I asked this question to this Polish lady

College Park). She was very happy to say YES (September 2004).

College (2002). I was a graduate student there from 1958 to 1961. There
were no female students then.
- During this cold-war period, there was one male student
from Poland studying at the Woodrow Wilson School for Public Affairs. He was
exceptional, because students from communist countries
were unthinkable at that time. He came as a Woodrow Wilson fellow to attend
the W. Wilson School for Public Affairs.
- At the end of World War I, Wilson (the president of the United State) had his 14-point plan for the world peace. His plan included the unification and independence of Poland. Since then, Princeton had been granting fellowships to Polish students. I assume this program still continues. Wilson was the president of Princeton University before becoming the president of the United States.

More Poland Pages
- Photos from Poland. Poland
has a very interesting history, and many Polish men and women made
contributions to the world history.
- Poland for Koreans. Poland and Korea are surrounded by powerful neighbors. Yet, they both have been able to develop their lifestyles while dealing with powerful influences from their neighbors. Koreans have far more U.S.-educated PhDs, but Poland is far ahead in collecting Nobel prizes. Koreans can learn something from Poland.
