It is fun to travel around the world and collect
Coca-Cola cans from different countries.

- Young Suh Kim
Professor of Physics, Emeritus
University of Maryland
College Park, Maryland, USA - I was born in 1935 at a village north of the 38th parallel when Korea
was one country. My family moved to Seoul in 1946 before Joseph Stalin of
the Soviet Union established his puppet government headed by Kim Il-Sung
in 1948.
- In 1954, I came to the United States to become a freshman at the
Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittburgh. In 1958, I went to
Princeton University for my graduate study. After completing my PhD
degree there in 1961, I stayed there for one additional year as a
post-doc. In 1962, I started my professional career as a faculty
member at the University of Maryland near Washington, DC.
- In 1983, I started travelling around the world to attend academic
conferences in the world. It was exciting to see the places I used to
hear about. I took many photos. I had my
own cameras since 1959.
- In 2007, I became an emeritus professor at the University of Maryland.
This means that I do not have to teach students in classrooms. I became
free to do whatever I wanted to do. Yes, I published many articles and
books since then. I also travelled to places I wanted to go. I now
have digital cameras. I have many photos. The problem is to compose
stories by arranging those photos.
Do you know where this building is? - Sergei Eisenstein
was a creative Soviet-era film producer. We like to
think movie makers shoot the films according to the stories written by
others, like the "War and Peace" by Leo Tolstoy. Eisenstein had a
different idea. One should take films first, and then edit those to
construct a story.
Right, we do not think of stories when we take photos while travelling. We take them out of our impulses. However, we like to convey ideas when we organize them into albums. For instance, we like to list photos having to do with music into a music page, in order to brag about my music background. I hope you would enjoy my albums.
- Web albums are quite different from the conventional book albums. When
you show book albums to others, you can talk to them and explain to them
orally your purpose of placing those photos at appropriate places in the
album. Then they will gain a better understanding of your personality.
In the case of web albums, you are not there to explain to the viewers. They have to find out what you intend to tell them by looking at their computer screens. This is indeed a challenging problem. I am still struggling with this new problem.

I received my PhD degree from Princeton in 1961, seven years after high school graduation in 1954. This means that I did much of the ground work for the degree during my high school years. - There are many ways of doing physics research. There are also many different ways to present the
research result. I choose to do it in my stylish way.
