The Presbyterian church I attended during my childhood years. This building has two separate front doors. One for men and the other for women. Men and women could not sit at the same place according to the Confucian tradition.

• I am a scientist and cannot be too religious, but my Christian background is very strong, stronger than my professional colleagues in the United States. I enjoy this strength.

  For instance, I often mention Nicodemus (from the Gospel of John) during my conference talks. The audience becomes blank.

  I received my PhD degree from Princeton in 1961, seven years after high school graduation in 1954. This means that I did much of the ground work for the degree during my high school years covering the years (1950-53) of the Korean War.
