Fundamental Interactions in Physics and Astrophysics

Ph. D. position

A research fellowship, from the Institut Interunivesitaire des Sciences Nucléaires (IISN), which is part of the Fonds National de la Recherche Scientifique (FNRS), is available in the group "Fundamental Interactions in Physics and Astrophysics" at the Université de Liège to start in fall 2008. This post will remain open until a suitable candidate is found.

This post is targeted towards students interested in a doctoral degree in theoretical physics under the direction of one of the members of the group. The candidates must have an undergraduate degree (4 or 5 years) in Physics, including training in quantum mechanics and at least some background in quantum field theory. They must also be fluent in either English, French or Russian.

The group "Fundamental Interactions in Physics and Astrophysics" at the Université de Liège consists at present of 5 permanent members (M. Bawin, J.R. Cudell, J. Cugnon, R. Sartor and I. Stancu), 1 long-term staff (I.P. Ivanov), 4 postdocs (P. Ciarcelluti, C. Lorcé, D. Mancusi and F. Sandin), and 4 graduate students. Our group studies many aspects of hadronic physics, as well as some issues of the electroweak theory and astroparticle physics. Specifically for the PhD thesis we will suggest to work either on the structure and observational signatures of various non-minimal Higgs mechanisms or on diffractive processes in high-energy hadronic scattering.
Students interested in this post should send by email a letter of motivation, a curriculum vitae, including a transcript of their courses and marks, the full text of the undergraduate thesis, together with a statement of research interests and two letters of reference to: Igor P. Ivanov, email: Igor.Ivanov@ulg.ac.be
or
Jean-René Cudell, email: JR.Cudell@ulg.ac.be
